Dental filling is a procedure to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function. Dentist usually removes the decayed part and then cleans that area and places filling material in the cavity. Further decay is prevented by closing off spaces where bacteria can enter.

Do dental fillings hurt?

On the extent of damage caused by decay the dentist will choose to take an Xray. Sensitivity should decrease in one to two weeks. If your tooth is extremely sensitive or your sensitivity does not decrease after two weeks, contact your dentist's office for an appointment. The most common reason for pain right after a filling is that the filling is too high; your dentist can adjust the filling by checking the occlusion (bite) of your teeth and removing sufficient of the excess filling material to decrease the pain. Procedure - the dentist will numb the area around the tooth with a local anaesthetic. After that, a drill will be used to remove the decayed area.

Next, your dentist will probe or test the area during the decay removal process to determine if all the decay has been removed. Your dentist will prepare the space for the filling by cleaning the cavity of bacteria and debris, once the decay has been removed. If the decay is near the root, your dentist may first put in a liner made of glass ionomer, composite resin, or other material to protect the nerve. The tooth-colored material is applied in layers after the dentist has removed the decay and cleaned the area.

After that a UV light that "cures" or hardens each layer is applied. When the multi-layering process is completed, your dentist will shape the composite material to the desired result, trim off any excess material and polish the final restoration.

How long do dental filling last?

How long your dental filling last is depends on number of factors, including how dept is your cavity and which material your dentist used to fill the cavity.


There are three fillings :-

1. Gold filling - This filling looks like gold, but it is filled with gold, copper and other metals etc. This filling last the longest from 15 to 30 years.
2. Silver filling – This filling looks like silver, but it is filled with silver, mercury, copper and tin etc. This filling last from 10 to 15 years.
3. Composite resins – This filling looks like same color as your teeth, but it is filled quartz or glass etc. This filling don’t last the long, you need to replace every 5 to 7 years.

Which is best filling for tooth?

Now a day’s Gold filling become rare and silver filling is not preferred due to its mercury content. Both are unhealthy and subject to cracking. Composite resins are most used filling as people like having filling with same color as their teeth.
